A bit of a Marathon for the Colts…record breakers!!

Bright sunshine bathed Vicarage Lane for Brading Town Colts first 24 hour Kickathon. The challenge was to keep a ball rolling from 11.00 on Sunday 1st May until 11.00 the next day.

The attempt got off to a great start with more than 200 people getting involved with the annual Teams v Supporters games. Once again these games took place in a highly competitive atmosphere (the losers knowing it would be a long 12 months until the next one!) but the fun and smiles lasted throughout the day and into the evening.

As dusk fell the floodlights came on and through the night players, many of whom were camping at the ground, practiced their skills as well as taking part in games of football/golf, football/baseball, football/tennis and even football/croquet! Matches were arranged at various stages including a game of Walking football which proved to be trickier than it sounds! All of the players who played on through the hardest, darkest hours in steady drizzle showed amazing commitment.

Special mention to Taylor and Jaydon from the Under 8s, Charlie and Theo (Under 14s) and the Under 13 squad who toughed out the night stint.

Monday morning saw the stage set for a dramatic climax with a world record attempt for consecutive penalties. With a target of 2,040 set by another Youth Football Club and 3 hours left it looked like a difficult assignment. However, as more and more players arrived, with an hour to go the benchmark was within sight and by 10.30 the record was not just broken but smashed, Brading totting up an incredible 2,600 spot kicks. A photo-call for the record-breakers and the last few minutes of play concluded a truly memorable weekend.
