Pre- Season Report 2017/18

The club enjoyed a very successful 2016-17 season with the First Team finishing a very creditable third in what was a thrilling last few weeks between the top four clubs, and all other teams Reserves and A’s all the way through to the Youth sides achieving well in their various leagues and divisions.

During the close season period nothing has stood still and club and ground maintenance has continued apace, ensuring a venue fitting for the Romans. This maintenance has seen in recent months new pitch perimeter fencing, repainted club building and re-roofing of the dugouts – not to mention one of the best pitch surfaces in the whole of the Wight.

We now look forward to 2017-18 with great anticipation. Training starts first week in July, then the friendlies, then the season itself. New training facilities are also earmarked for 2017/18 – watch this space!

Up the Romans!

The reserve side who managed to finish 4th in Comb 1. A season that could have been much more fruitful, if a regular keeper could have been found…..instead of a different stand-in keeper….. most weeks!

All in all, a very good job done by Adam Connor, with one hand literally behind his back.

Ventnor grabbed their winner with 10 minutes to go, we now await the result of their game with Champions W&B on Wednesday, to see where we finish up.

A much improved performance from us hinged on missed chances and two poorly conceded goals !

2 disallowed goals didn’t help matters….. but we definitely deserved something from the game.

A frustrating season! It was the start that really put us under pressure, with 3 draws in the first 6 games. The run of 11 straight wins after losing at Shanklin was a superb effort from the lads and put us right in the mix …..we were at one point, 9/10 points behind W&B!

The draw with Binstead, was seen to be the key game that put us under pressure, we responded superbly by beating Shanklin 1-0.

Defeat followed at W&B, when they turned in a outstanding performance and then today’s narrow defeat.

Ventnor have been a thorn in our sides this season – the only side we haven’t beaten and we’ve also gone out of three cups at the Lions Den.

All in all, a huge improvement on last season – we have won more games and finished at worse 3rd.

First season in a while that we’ve been unbeaten at home…..the 3 defeats this season have come against top 4 sides.

Thanks to all connected at the club for their hard work this season, always grateful for that and to Mark Cook for assisting me this year. He’s been superb and the lads have really taken to him.

Huge thanks to the players for their efforts. At times we been superb this year – West Wight in the cup, W&B and Shanklin at home were the highlights.

If we can all stick together and add a few new faces , a year older and more experienced who knows what next season could bring.
